Boca Raton (/rəˈtoʊn/ rə-TOHN) is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida. Boca Raton is a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area, located 45 miles (72 km) north of Miami. 29.1 sq mi (75.4 km2) is the area of the city, of which 27.2 sq mi (70.4 km2) is land and 1.9 sq mi (5.0 km2) is water (6.63%). Boca Raton’s Pearl City neighborhood lies north of downtown and within city limits. Red Reef Park and South Inlet Park are two miles of beaches on Boca Raton’s eastern coast.


The city of Boca Raton is known for its beaches, golf courses, and parks on Florida’s southeastern coast. There is a butterfly garden, a sea turtle sanctuary and trails at Red Reef Park, a large oceanfront park with trails. The Boca Raton Museum of Art has modern and contemporary American and European collections, as well as a sculpture garden. The nearby Mizner Park Amphitheater hosts concerts and events.


According to the Census Bureau, Boca Raton is a “principal city” in the Miami metropolitan area. The barrier island Deerfield Beach Island (DBI), also called Deerfield Cay, is approximately one square mile in size. As in other South Florida cities, Boca Raton has a water table that prevents building basements; however, plumbing and sewage are built underneath streets and homes, as well as electrical systems. There are several high points in the city, such as 4th Avenue, which is aptly named “High Street.” The highest point in the area is the guard shack at Camino Gardens, which is 24 feet (7.3 m) above sea level. There is a beach club at Boca Raton Hotel that is 23 feet (7.0 m) above sea level.


Boca has several small tunnels under roads, but the roads are built up several feet or are on dunes. There are several tunnels under State Road A1A at Spanish River Park, from the west side of the road, where beachgoers can park, to the east side of the road, where the beach is. Sand dunes formed by erosion and other natural features have already raised A1A above the surrounding land.


The Wick Theater & Costume Museum is located in Boca Raton. Downtown Boca Raton has a lifestyle center called Mizner Park. Several stores and fashion boutiques, restaurants, an iPic movie theater, and housing are located in the area. Aside from the Boca Raton Museum of Art and the Count de Hoernele Amphitheater, the Center for the Arts at Mizner Park is located on the north end of the development. Mizner Park is adjacent to Royal Palm Place, which contains upscale shopping, restaurants, and apartments. In Boca Raton, Town Center at Boca Raton is the largest enclosed and conventional shopping mall in Palm Beach County and the third largest mall by square footage in South Florida, behind Sawgrass Mills and Aventura Mall.


The main campus of Florida Atlantic University and the corporate headquarters of Office Depot are also located in Boca Raton. The Evert Tennis Academy, owned by former professional tennis player Chris Evert, is also located there. Located in central Boca Raton, Boca Town Center is one of Palm Beach County’s largest malls. As part of the downtown district, there is a lifestyle center and entertainment hub called Mizner Park, as well as Royal Palm Place, a mixed-use district that combines residential, retail, and entertainment uses.


Boca Raton has several airports including Boca Raton Airport, immediately adjacent to Florida Atlantic University and Interstate 95; Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is approximately 23 miles to the south, in Dania Beach; Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) is approximately 25 miles to the north, near West Palm Beach; Miami International Airport (MIA) is approximately 46 miles to the south, in Miami. Local bus service is provided in the area by PalmTran.
